For the next 4 weeks we are going to focus on color themes!
Our challenge for week 5 was RED and the submissions were fire!
Red is a color that is very emotionally intense. It’s connected to blood, rage, love, romance, danger, anger, desire, and so on.
It’s been very exciting to see how you use this color to amplify the stories and emotions you want to convey in your art.

In April I did a self-portrait series. It was focused around my sense of frustration in the midst of all this going on these days and I felt that the red hood was the perfect match for those emotions.

“A FAR EASTERN FANTASY”
Headpiece: IVY-Design
Model/MuA: Fumihime Kurosawa

I shot this last spring and only recently during lockdown had the time to finalise it ❤️
This is the first time I have shared it with anyone… and the first time I have shared any work in this group and to say I’m nervous about sharing any of my works with all you amazing artists is an understatement ☺️
Photography by Elina Khachaturyan
I’m just the model for this series, but I adored these images and wanted to share them regardless. These images are shot by my talented friend Elina Khachaturyan.

Underwater portrait of Mather.

This is a self portrait like Snow White

Right before the CV19 lockdown my last shoot was a Frida Kahlo inspired shoot. Red is about power and strength.
“At the end of the day we can endure much more than we think we can” – Frida

I made this photo in February 2020, in the place, that totally stole my heart – Stokksness in Iceland. It has pretty flat black beach and a calm bay, so waves cover sand slowly and make a perfect mirror.
The weather was truly Icelandic – +3C with wind and rain😄
Photoshooting took us 3 minutes before model became frozen to the core.
Not a drop of Photoshop was used, just color correction.
I modelled for this set late last year, (before lockdown) after wanting to do this Klimt inspired look for so long…
Fun Fact- It is based on what I originally believed was a piece of art by Gustav Klimt called Tears of Gold… I discovered that this is a common misconception and it is actually by a French Artist called Anne Marie Zilberman!
This set was named ‘FREYJA’S TEARS’
after Freya-Norse goddess of everything feminine: love, beauty, sex, fertility, and gold.

Yukata borrowed from @eyes_of_thy_beholder
Here Mato portrays Hannya, a jealous female demon in Japanese folklore. I took inspiration from the circular Japanese windows but inverted it to a black space instead. Red strings which symbolises the red thread of fate in Japanese myths were placed behind the black window, seemingly severed from each other. Red is a dangerous, intense and seductive colour which I feel fits this shoot idea really well.

look at this gorgeous outfit by Fairytas , worn by @a_girskaya . I love the look of defeat in her expression. ❤️

This photo is part of my graduation project to raise awareness for invisible illnesses among young people.
I personally suffer from a connective tissue disease that makes all of my joints dislocate multiple times which influences my life a lot.

I love creating with the colour red. To me it signifies power, pain. sacrifice, passion & love.

The corset dress was graciously borrowed by the amazing designer Holly Rafaela.
The headdress I made from various pieces from local fabric stores including skewers, roses, Christmas ornaments and a table mat!

Featuring the amazing Ami-Raine and highly temperamental Vinny (he did seem to really like Ami)

This self portrait is one of my most loved ones. It’s very special to me because I had SUCH a creative time that it was like meditation.
It’s shot near my grandma’s neigbours house (actually right under their windows) and next to the road. I was naked hiding behind few poppy flowers…it was amazing!
I love symbolism of poppy flowers and I studied a lot about them. I got a mention of them in Indian mythology and as I have Indian husband and live in India, obviously it atracted me tooooo much.
This photo is part of series Samaadhi (deep meditative space).

This shot of Charie from earlier in the year, before lock down. Designer is Stephen van Eeden, MUAH by Andrea van den Houten, Lighting by SJ van Zyl, and crown by Samantha Hanlon of SunkissedHandmade.

The Warrior
This is my oldest daughter Jade Snider. I normally have to bribe her with bags of spicy cheetos so that she will model for me. 🤣

My red challenge is a photo that I made next to the great Kareva Margarita. Anna Psy (art Photo Projects) is one of favorite models and maybe even my Muse. It was really difficult for me to post this picture for the first time because there was already a similar picture from Kareva. In the end I’ve become too love this picture
Dress made by @divergent.flowers

I wanted to design a sculptural 3-D gown reminiscent of A classical frieze and also draw upon elements in a vintage Italian silk velvet fabric I had admired. I was then able to add a few other beautiful designer elements to complete the look for my photoshoot featuring, Jade, as my red queen.

Stepping outside of my comfort zone for this week’s “RED” Challenge! I made this headpiece, inspired partly by Peking Opera headdresses. It was my first time making something other than a flower crown! Another thing I tried is bold makeup for the first time in a self-portrait! I am definitely NO makeup artist but I am starting to really love experimenting with all sorts of elements this lockdown, very much inspired by Bella Kotak’s ingenuity and others’!
Color Lab actions used include Black Gold and Renaissance. I was dying to use Black Gold for some time as the image that Bella and I first shot together was for that action! ❤
Thanks everyone for always supporting me, I really appreciate it. Used natural light coming into my living room and a backdrop!
